JERUSALEM
— An Israeli photographer jailed by Libya for five months returned home Monday after an Austrian tycoon brokered a deal for his freedom that involved the delivery of 20 prefabricated homes from a Libyan charity to the Gaza Strip.

The agreement involved months of covert mediation between two countries that have no diplomatic ties and a long history of hostility. Israel's foreign minister praised the Libyans for their handling of the affair.

Rafael Rafram Chaddad, an Israeli-Tunisian dual national, disappeared in March in Libya, where he was photographing Jewish heritage sites on behalf of an organization that documents the history of Libya's vanished Jewish community.

His last communication was an e-mail he sent saying he was heading to the Jewish Quarter in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, to photograph a synagogue, according to Pedazur Benattia, whose Or Shalom organization sponsored the photographer's trip. Chaddad was supposed to board a flight to Tunisia the next day but never made it, Benattia said.

Chaddad's whereabouts were kept secret until late Sunday, when Israel's military censor lifted a gag order and announced he had left Libyan and landed in Vienna. The gag had been imposed because of fears that publicity could endanger Chaddad and prospects for his release.

Looking tired but healthy, Chaddad was greeted by a crowd of reporters and relatives at Israel's international airport outside Tel Aviv when he landed Monday afternoon accompanied by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who helped engineer his release.

Lieberman thanked Libya, and said Tripoli's “demands were very reasonable, very responsible and very logical and we will honor their demands.”

Libya bans Israelis from entering the country, and Chaddad, who declined to speak to reporters Monday, was traveling on his Tunisian passport at the time of his arrest.

Israeli officials said the efforts to free Chaddad involved Italy, which has close ties to Libya, as well as France, the U.S. and Tunisia. The officials said the final deal was arranged by Lieberman and an Austrian-Jewish businessman, Martin Schlaff, a friend of the Israeli foreign minister.

Chaddad was flown from Libya to Austria on Schlaff's private jet, the officials said. Schlaff is one of Austria's richest men.

Lieberman refused to say what promises were made to Libya. But key in the deal were the prefabricated homes for Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, the officials said.

The houses were aboard a ship dispatched by a Libyan charity to breach Israel's Gaza blockade in July.

The Israelis wouldn't allow the vessel to reach Gaza and diverted it to an Egyptian port. Under the deal brokered by Schlaff through his contacts in the Libyan and Israeli governments, Israel agreed to allow the houses from the ship's cargo to be transferred overland into Gaza as a gesture to the Libyans, the officials said.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because the details were not officially made public. In Vienna, a spokesman for Schlaff would not comment.

Libyan authorities did not comment and there was no mention of the story in the country's media.

Also Monday, U.N. officials said they signed a deal with Libya for a $50 million project to rebuild houses for 1,250 Gaza refugees. It appeared that this might be part of the agreement over the freed Israeli, although officials would not confirm that.

The deal between Libya and UNRWA, the agency that deals with refugees, was announced in Jordan. The official Petra news agency said Libya's Gadhafi International Charity would donate $50 million to build houses for 1,250 Gaza refugees, as well as $500,000 to provide meals for 110,000 destitute Gaza Palestinians at the end of the daily Ramadan fast.

Thousands of homes were destroyed during Israel's military operation in Gaza 18 months ago to try to stop rocket attacks by Palestinian militants.

Chaddad was open about what he was doing in Libya, and it was unclear what had triggered his arrest, said Benattia, whose group sponsored Chaddad's trip.

Libya, like many other Arab countries, was home to a large Jewish community until the middle of the 20th century, when Jews fled persecution linked to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

li-ion Battery Storage – If you don’t plan on using the FPCBP50 battery for a month or more, we recommend storing it in a clean, dry, cool place away from heat and metal objects. Ni-Cd, NiMH and li-ion batteries will self-discharge during storage; remember to break them in before use. Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries must be kept at full charge during storage. This is usually achieved by using special trickle chargers. If you do not have a trickle charger, do not attempt to store SLA batteries for more than three months.

Charger for Samsung Camcorder

by -thecableguy- – 7/13/10 5:21 PM

I recently moved and I must have lost the charger to my camcorder in all the chaos. I took my camcorder to Best Buy to see if they had a charger that would match. When I showed the guy my camera he got a frightened look on his face and told me he had never seen a charger like the one I needed.

I don't know what the model number is. I searched everywhere on the camera and couldn't find one but it seems to be almost identical to the SC-HMX20C camcorder that is currently on the samsung website but mine is not a newer model. It is a few years old. It does 1080p at 30fps and 60fps and does 300fps for 10 seconds in SD. I found some battery info on the bottom of the camera which I don't know if it will be any help in pointing me in the right direction but it reads:'Battery: DC7.4v = 0.55A'

I have searched high and low and cannot seem to find a charger anywhere. Any ideas?

CAMCORDER REDEFINED: SONY DEBUTS WORLD'S FIRST CONSUMER INTERCHANGEABLE LENS HD CAMCORDER

SAN DIEGO, June 13, 2010 – Following the 25th anniversary of its industry-leading Handycam® product line, Sony today announced the innovative NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder.
The new NEX-VG10 is the world's first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor.

“The NEX-VG10 takes Sony's Handycam line to the next level by allowing unprecedented artistic expression that isn't possible with conventional consumer video cameras,” said Andy Bubala, director of Sony's camcorder business. “With this camcorder, video enthusiasts and photographers can now capture cinematic full HD movies and premium stereo sound.”

Sony's NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Handycam® Camcorder is equipped with the same Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor used in the “NEX-5″ and “NEX-3″ digital cameras and compatible with the high grade “E-mount” series of smaller, lighter lenses optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF. It is also compatible with a wealth of “A-mount” interchangeable lenses used by Sony's existing α DSLR camera lineup via a mount adapter (sold separately), including award winning Sony G Lenses and Carl Zeiss® branded lenses.

Coupled with Sony's powerful BIONZ® processor, the camcorder's Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor realizes high resolution video and 14 megapixel still images. Approximately 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found in conventional camcorders, the APS HD CMOS sensor enables an extremely shallow depth of field. This allows videographers to achieve cinematic results with stunning background defocus (bokeh). Users can also enjoy DSLR-quality photo capture with features like Auto HDR, Handheld Twilight, and Anti Motion Blur, as well as catch fast action sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to seven fps.

The NEX-VG10 can capture full 1920×1080 high definition video at up to 24Mbps for amazing clarity and detail, ideal for recording on to Blu-ray Disc™ media. It also comes with an E-mount 18-200mm lens optimized for video shooting that offers a powerful 11x optical zoom in addition to a silent auto-focus system and Optical Steadyshot™ image stabilization with Active Mode for superior versatility.

Satisfying the needs of serious videographers, sound quality matches the stellar imaging performance of the NEX-VG10. Its Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four individual microphone capsules. The result is exceptionally clear stereo audio with high directional response, allowing videographers to capture more sound from their subject and less background noise. The camcorder also features dedicated inputs for optional external microphones and headphones to monitor sound levels.

The camcorder's TruBlack™ technology brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to its 3.0″ Xtra Fine LCD™ swivel display, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions. The LCD is supplemented by a high-resolution adjustable electronic viewfinder that helps framing, monitoring and capturing clear images.

Compact and easy to handle, the NEX-VG10 gives videographers the flexibility of a removable lens with the ergonomics and operability of a Handycam camcorder. An intuitive jog dial and hotkeys make it easy to navigate menus and adjust shooting parameters, including full manual control of Iris, Shutter Speed, Gain and White Balance for professional results.

Dual accessory shoes (Alpha Hot Shoe/Universal Cold Shoe) allow for many still photography and video accessories, such as the ECM-CG50 shotgun microphone and external flash lighting. There's also a choice of rechargeable battery options, including the NP-FV100 that provides up to 315 minutes of continuous HD shooting (may vary), and a specially designed soft carrying case.
Included with purchase as a download voucher ($99 value), Sony Vegas® Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 video editing software includes powerful tools for video compositing, color correction and sound mixing to produce cinema-quality HD movies with ease. You can also share your creations via DVD, Blu-ray Disc™ media, or upload to the web – all from one simple program.

The NEX-VG10 accepts both Memory Stick PRO Duo™ (including Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media. Users can record up to four hours of high definition footage (1920×1080, FH mode) when using the 32GB memory card.

Sony's Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX offers an industry leading 30MB per second transfer rate, which means Handycam users can upload video clips in a fraction of actual playback time.

Price and Availability
The NEX-VG10 will be available in September for about $2,000 and presales on www.sonystyle.com will begin July 14. They will also be available at Sony Style® retail stores and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld Are Attacked by Fashion Editor of Black Lifestyle Magazine for Photo of Schiffer, Blacked-Up

July 14th, 2010 by Alfredo Figueroa

I made new Photos in the last months – please tell me if you think they are good:

Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

Bret Michaels has cleared up rumors that he presented girlfriend Kristi Lynn Gibson with diamond engagement rings. As you may know, tabloids reported some days ago that Poison’s front man had popped the question to his on-and-off girlfriend for 16 years.

Bret Michaels appeared today at CSB’s Early Show and when questioned about the supposed engagement ring news he just said: “No. We are not engaged yet, We’re a work in progress.”

And what about the ring in Kristi Lynn Gibson’s hand?

“a promise ring … a friendship ring, with benefits. That’s what we call it.”

Notice that he has stated they are not engaged… yet. So that means marrying is a possibility in the rocker’s mind!
